The only latchkey kid of a single mother, a far more introverted Rose made an early habit of escaping into books, television, and her own imagination. Regardless, mom and daughter were close. When the Marigold matriarch died, two years before the events of the game, the nearly 18 year old Rose was crushed.
Alan Wake is her favorite author and celebrity. Rose knows it's not love, but she does obviously harbor a bit of a crush for the notorious, and married, writer. Mostly, Rose thinks it would be something to know Alan personally, to have his attention and be a friend. It's an adoration that does lean on the extreme ( the mini-shrine, the fansite she religiously maintains ), but she's honestly harmless.
Rose appreciated Rusty's feelings, maybe even returned them. But he represented the small town life in Bright Falls that she was eager to escape. He was, however, one of the few friends she had.
Following the events of the first game, as Cynthia Weaver before her, Rose has gone a touch 'mad with the night'. While attempting to keep some semblance of the humdrum existence she used to lament, she also tries her best to shoulder the mantle of Lady of the Light.
